Oh come on Apple, stop being so cheap!!!

Even a kid knows what an apple 🍎 with a bite taken off stands for. Yes, it’s a brand that makes products that either most people already own or envy owning. And they have evolved their ecosystem in such a way that if you already own their products, you are thinking of either upgrading it or buying other Apple products. This, of course, is in line with the core values of the company as disclosed by the late Steve Jobs. Premium, luxury, style, quality, are just a few of the words that come to your mind when you think of Apple products. But off late, I’ve been wondering if Apple has lost its way and is now only thinking of making money. It’s a year or two behind its competitors in terms of adopting new technologies, take wireless charging on the iPhone for example, OLED displays, or 5G for that matter, and they portray it as if they have invented something new. But lucky for Apple, the average Apple fan isn’t bothered, they are ignorant enough to not know about these things. It wasn’t until recently that they struck a chord closer to their loyalists’ hearts.

The average Apple iPhone owner upgrades their phone in no less than 2 years. So someone from Apple’s ecosystem, upgrading to an iPhone 12, probably owned an iPhone XS, if not something older. I wonder how such a user, buying the new iPhone, packed in its new “eco-friendly” packaging, would react when they open the box only to discover that there isn’t even a charger available. What’s worse is that the included cable has a USB-C port instead of the USB-A port that fits their old charger. So, the most natural thing they would do is use their old cable. But then as we all have observed, Apple cables have an uncanny ability to disintegrate when Apple believes it’s time for you to upgrade.

With all the innovation that they talk about, they are not even able to make cables that last. In my opinion, it’s just another means of making money, forcing their customers to buy new proprietary cables. Luckily there are quite a few long-lasting third-party cables out there. But what if you own a MacBook with MagSafe 2 charger as I do? Do I spend as much on a charger as my laptop is worth according to Apple’s trade-in program? Well then, it’s probably time to get a new laptop, and this time, not a Mac, please.

I wonder how all this aligns with their initiative to make the earth a greener planet. I guess they’d rather make a profit than saving the Earth. What do you do when your iPhone stops working? You sell it for peanuts, and your phone probably ends up in a shop where it gets used for parts. Not many people are aware, but with the latest generation of iPhones, there are not going to be many buyers for these parts. As a YouTuber recently demonstrated by swapping different components of one phone with another, Apple has added some sort of a lock where even if you replace say a battery or a camera module with a genuine part, the device refuses to accept it since the serial numbers don’t match up. Good going Apple. Let’s make the earth a greener planet, or let’s just not.
